Technology Overview

Enabling the Digital Home

The demands of next-generation networks are driving the need for VDSL, PON and other access technologies that can deliver 100+ megabits/second performance, connect homes easily to backbone networks and enable the cost-effective provisioning and distribution of a variety of new revenue-generating services like IPTV.  But delivering high-speed access is not enough. These services require extreme bandwidth not just to – but throughout – the home.

As new bandwidth-intensive applications are adopted, home networking will demand advanced technologies that are well beyond the capabilities of today’s WiFi and Multimedia over Coaxial (MoCA) solutions. The emerging standard for home networking is the International Telecommunications Union’s G.hn technology standard, which allows networking over all types of physical media – including power lines, coaxial cable and traditional twisted pair telephone cable. ITU’s G.hn standard is supported by a range of companies, including Ikanos and the other members of the HomeGrid Alliance.

Ikanos expects to continue its leadership in access technologies and develop new home networking technologies to support our customers’ evolving needs.
