Ikanos Delivers Up to 200 Mbps Over Copper with Velocity™-3 Solution

With Ikanos NodeScaleTM technology, Velocity-3 achieves full vectoring, enabling blazing fast performance over last-mile copper access to the digital home.

FREMONT, Calif., October 11, 2012 — Ikanos Communications, Inc. [NASDAQ:IKAN], a leading provider of advanced broadband semiconductor and software products for the digital home, today announced its newest broadband technology solution, Velocity™-3, a fully integrated Vectored VDSL chipset and software solution offering a leap forward performance for delivering broadband to the digital home. Ikanos’ vectoring solution enables carriers to deliver bandwidth-intensive services such as high definition television (HDTV), high speed Internet, bandwidth-rich cloud content access, Voice over IP (VoIP) and more – at approximately 1/10th the cost of deploying a pure fiber solution to individual home.

“With Velocity-3, we are delivering the broadband ‘holy grail’:  fiber speeds for a fraction of the cost of deploying fiber to individual homes,” according to Omid Tahernia, chief executive officer at Ikanos.  “Carriers benefit by super-charging their existing one billion copper line infrastructure, while satisfying consumers’ needs for ever-increasing bandwidth applications.”

This performance breakthrough is made possible with Ikanos’ NodeScale™ Vectoring technology.  Supporting up to 384 copper lines in a fiber terminated installation (FTTx), Velocity-3 identifies and cancels VDSL crosstalk from all lines in the vectored group, independent of binder, cable or chassis, increasing rate, reach, robustness and reliability.

“Due to the random nature of crosstalk which occurs throughout the entire cable
bundle, the potential of VDSL2 performance can only be realized when full Node-Level vectoring is applied across all the cables connected to the node,” according to Han Yufa, general manager of the Access Network Product Line for Huawei, one of the world’s largest providers of fixed access network solutions. “Huawei’s target is to protect the customer’s investment by eliminating the crosstalk of the existing copper plant using a flexible and future-proof architecture. We have been working with Ikanos for the past two years and now we are glad to see Velocity-3′s achievement on its way.”

Velocity-3 is a comprehensive and scalable solution for both pre-existing (brown-field) and next generation (green-field) network deployments.  Node Scale Vectoring enables carriers to realize the benefit of vectoring across their entire fiber to the node (FTTN) networks, while the same solution can also be used in smaller Fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC) and Fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) environments.

As the industry’s first fully integrated vectored VDSL chipset solution, Velocity-3 will be showcased at the Broadband World Forum (BBWF) in Amsterdam October 16 – 18 (Booth B3).
