Enabling One-box xDSL and Fiber–to-the-Home Deployments

Many service providers find themselves utilizing both xDSL and FTTH approaches to deliver broadband to their consumers. Having to develop and maintain separate devices for each approach adds significant cost and complexity to the deployment. By using a universal gateway – capable of handling both xDSL and FTTH – enables service providers to dramatically reduce overall cost of deployment and customer support.

In addition, service providers can combine the functions of optical network terminal and residential into the same solution. This one-box residential gateway provides a cost effective alternative for adding passive optical networking (PON) technology (used in most major FTTH deployments) and allows these operators to deploy a device now that can be upgraded later..

The must-have features of these universal gateways include:

  • Built in xDSL functionality – G.99x and others
  • High-speed WAN port – up to one Gbps Ethernet connectivity
  • Platform Commonality – ability for the operator to use the same processor and software platform for their FTTH and xDSL residential gateways
  • PON support – include the PON Media Access Converter (MAC) and allow the optical module to be added in the future
