Femtocell

Extending Mobile Access Indoors

Femtocells, or low power mobile phone base stations, connect into the mobile operator’s network through a residential gateway. A mobile phone in range of the femtocell at home automatically detects and uses the femtocell in preference to the outdoor cell sites. These devices need the processing horsepower to handle voice and multimedia traffic. They also need integration with high-performance broadband networks using VDSL to handle the backhaul, and advanced network management for cost-effective service provisioning.

With femtocell, service providers are able to reduce the amount and cost of the equipment needed for in-home wired and wireless access. Consumers gain low cost, flexible solutions which allows for improved mobile coverage, handset transparency and the availability of high quality, in-home enhanced services.

Must-have features include:

  • Performance - data transfer rates up to 100 Mbps
  • Wired broadband connectivity – VDSL2
  • Quality of Service - advanced quality of service features for multimedia services
